2015 finalists / Gloria Zein

“I tell stories. My sculptures are performers.I use them to activate a space or to give life to the history of a site.
Sometimes I invent new stories because I think they fit the places better than reality.”

Gloria Zein makes objects in response to specific locations which linger between sculpture and installation. Struck by the fleetingness of hopes and expectations that we attach to the material world, she looks at the sculptural value of surplus and seemingly vulgar things. Within this theatre of stuff, Zein creates sculptures evoking vulnerability and the burlesque, abundant interventions based on chance as well as orchestrations of leftovers from her studio practice.

Zein completed her MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, in 2011 and has exhibited internationally. Zein was awarded the Cass Prize for Sculpture in 2011, and shortlisted for the Lebensart Forderpreis Skulptur in 2013. Zein has been selected for numerous residencies including: M4 Gastatelier, Tetterode, Amsterdam, Salzamt, Linz, and Emily Harvey Foundation, Venice. In 2012 she received a commission from the Goethe- Institut, London, which remains in their collection today. Zein is based in Berlin.
