2023 Selection Panel

Participating artists were selected by theCoLAB Director Claire Mander and a panel of experts in the field of drawing including Rachel Sloan, Courtauld Institute of Art, Roger Malbert, writer and curator, author of books on contemporary drawing, Nina Wisnia, artist and Patron of the Arts and Luce Garrigues, London Art Week.


2023 Tutors

2023’s BODY and PLACE residency was led by tutors Thomas & Clare Newbolt:

Thomas Newbolt
was born in 1951 and studied at Camberwell School of Art from 1970-74. He exhibited at Roland Browse and Delbanco from1974-77, at Browse and Darby from 1977-2007 and now at Piano Nobile Fine Art. Thomas was Artist in Residence (Fellow Commoner in the Creative Arts) at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1979-81 and Harkness Fellow at the University of Virginia from 1981-83. He has taught at Camberwell, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee 1983, Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge School of Art) and the Royal Drawing School.

Clare Newbolt was born in London in 1956. She attended Camberwell School of Art & Crafts (1973-1977) before living and painting in Italy for a year and in the USA for two years. In 2002 she had a three month residency at the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation, Connecticut, USA. Clare has illustrated cookery and children's books, exhibited textiles in Japan, and drawings in London and the USA. Her 'Colour Notes for Children' was published in 2006. In 2012 she was awarded a Doctoral Degree from the Prince's School of Traditional Arts 2012 entitled 'Art is the Imitation of Nature in Her Manner of Operation'. She has taught drawing and painting in schools to children of all ages, as well as to adults at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts, the Royal Drawing School, and from her studio in Cambridge.
