About the Artwork
LR Vandy’s rope sculptures are renowned. They peopled the Weston Gallery of Yorkshire Sculpture Park during her first solo museum exhibition, RISE in 2026. Her Dancing in Time: The Ties That Bind Us, 2023 towered 5 metres tall outside the National Slavery Museum in Liverpool during the Biennale and its maquette at three metres tall inside the Artist’s Garden in 2024-5.
Now, this leading voice in contemporary sculpture is creating a special time-limited edition to raise funds to save The Artist’s Garden - the world’s first and only sculpture garden dedicated to the work of women artists.
Garden Dancers: Mother and Child 2026 are individually hand-woven and twisted using rope that has been made the same way for the last 400 years in The Ropery at Chatham Historic Dockyard, next to the artist’s studio. Interweaving the knotted histories of trade, power and resilience inherent in rope with dance’s promise of liberation, the Garden Dancers: Mother and Child are sculptural tributes to the central role Black women, and Mothers continue to play in binding communities together. They dance their dance as an act of both resistance and collective joy – employing this time-honoured strategy to break free from oppressive systems.
Vandy says: “Growing up I never saw people like me, let alone women, in our public sculptures. The opportunity and platform that The Artist’s Garden has given me, and so many other artists that they have exhibited, has played an enormous part in the development of my career.

Further Information
Since opening in 2021, The Artist's Garden has welcomed over 100,000 visitors a year, free of charge, offering a public platform for women's sculpture found nowhere else in the world. Yet Places for London, TfL's commercial property arm now wants to clear the site from 1 October 2026. The campaign already has the backing of Westminster City Council, the Greater London Authority's Culture at Risk Register, and local MP Rachel Blake, but it urgently needs funds and public support to secure the garden's future.

The sculptures will be safely packed in soft wrapping and cardboard and shipped (in the UK) via recorded delivery. Shipping is £20.00 via the Post Office, this is a fully trackable service. This shipment is not insured.
